Insignia

Play original Xbox games online again

What is Insignia

1

Overview

Insignia is a revival service for original Xbox Live — Microsoft's online gaming platform that was shut down in 2010. It recreates the Xbox Live infrastructure so you can play original Xbox games online with real Xbox hardware or the Xemu emulator.

2

Supported platforms

Insignia supports: original Xbox console hardware (modified or with a softmod), and Xemu (PC emulator). A PlayStation- or Switch-style jailbreak is not required on original hardware — softmodding via save exploit is enough.

Original Xbox Setup

3

Softmod your Xbox

To connect to Insignia on original hardware, your Xbox must be softmodded. The most common method uses a save exploit. Follow a current softmod guide (search for "Rocky5 Softmod" on the Xbox modding community).

Softmodding voids your warranty and carries a small risk of bricking if done incorrectly. Follow a trusted guide carefully.
4

Install a dashboard

Install a custom dashboard (UnleashX or XBMC) that allows you to configure network settings and patch system files.

5

Patch for Insignia

Follow the Insignia setup guide at insignia.live to patch your Xbox dashboard to connect to Insignia servers instead of the defunct Xbox Live servers.

6

Create an Insignia account

Register at insignia.live. Your gamertag and account will be hosted on Insignia's servers.

7

Connect to the internet

Connect your Xbox via Ethernet to your router (Wi-Fi adapters exist but Ethernet is strongly preferred). Configure DHCP or a static IP in the Xbox network settings.

Xemu Setup

8

Download Xemu

Download Xemu from xemu.app. This is an open-source original Xbox emulator for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

9

Obtain required files

Xemu requires a BIOS (mcpx_1.0.bin), EEPROM, and an Xbox hard disk image. These must be dumped from your own console. See the Xemu documentation for exact steps.

10

Configure Xemu for Insignia

Follow the Insignia guide at insignia.live for Xemu-specific network configuration. This typically involves configuring Xemu's network settings to route through a virtual network adapter.

11

Sign into Insignia from Xemu

Launch a compatible game from your Xemu library → go to Xbox Live in-game → sign in with your Insignia credentials.

Check the Insignia-supported game list on their website before purchasing or dumping games.

Troubleshooting

12

Cannot connect to Insignia servers

Verify your Xbox/Xemu is correctly patched per the Insignia guide. Ensure your router's firewall isn't blocking Xbox Live ports. Check the Insignia Discord for current server status.

13

NAT issues

Xbox Live requires an Open NAT for best connectivity. Port forward the following on your router: TCP/UDP 3074 and TCP 80.

TCP 80
TCP/UDP 3074 → [Xbox IP]

Game not listed on Insignia

Not all Xbox Live games are supported by Insignia. Check their compatibility list. New games are added as the project matures.
